Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The White House declined to provide additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had urged him to cede significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Yet, on this week the American president embraced a peace initiative supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he said.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented conversations concerning the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of reports that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he added.
