British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
