Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously served in military or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an vow to defend and support this founding document," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that break the legal system or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The video message seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a joint announcement condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no role in America," they stated. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our country with exceptional loyalty and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical digital publications and withdraw his violent discourse before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Lawmakers' Strong Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We are veterans and security experts who love this nation and took an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must unite and condemn the ex-president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Responses
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the death of government members."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of Congress instructing troops to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to organize a video message to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members advising them to ignore the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system relies on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
