Folly and Royal Self-Entitlement Sunk Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet
It all began with a single photograph, arguably the most significant ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.
There stood the Duke of York, standing closely beside a teenage girl, while an associate smiled conspiratorially in the background.
Without that snapshot, taken at a party in 2001, few would have credited the claims of a young woman who said she was transported across the ocean and obliged to have cursory relations with a individual of the monarchy?
A strange, indicative move by someone who had overtly claimed to have never been aware of her, said he could never have had relations with her, and yet provided a substantial sum of his mother's resources to resolve a protracted lawsuit.
Over a Decade of Controversy
Considering this, conversations of the royal family acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This scandal has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that picture, and another snapshot of Andrew ambling amiably with a convicted sex offender came to light.
- Arrogance: To what extent did his brothers and sisters, maybe even his parents, know that Andrew was so self-entitled?
- Dubious Friendships: They must have understood, if his staff and the law enforcement were performing their duties, that he had some highly questionable companions given he openly hosted them to estates.
- Financial Extravagance: If the monarchy did not know about his sexual proclivities, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with state resources.
Travel were documented in public records: helicopter transfers from the estate to a sporting venue and back again in time for midday meal, exclusive air travel instead of scheduled services, all for the benefit of "the travel enthusiast".
World of Deference
Additionally the presumption which demanded respect when he entered a room or the supreme obsession about his designations used on his correspondence in messages to his friends.
He could get away with it while his mother, who strangely pampered him, was still surviving. The monarch did at least remove him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, it is now clear, untruthful television interview six years ago.
Recent Developments
It was only in the last fortnight that events accelerated, following the publication of biographical works giving more disturbing information of his conduct and that of his companions.
Further disclosures have again revealed Andrew's belief that he could get away with lying about his relationship with a disgraced individual.
Society (and the journalists) were far ahead of the royals. There was nobody of any significance to support him, a outcome of all those years of arrogance.
Institutional Fears
The more astute family members understood that. The primary concern is to transfer the crown, if not as before at least whole and unstained.
They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of earlier rulers, demonstrating they are beneficial, accountable and reactive to their people.
His actions endangered all that in peril in an age when submission and discretion is no longer sufficient.
Aftermath
Finally, the well-known uncertain monarch was pressured more. There was no alternative. The palace had surrendered command of the account.
Presently the removal of titles and the persistent and lifetime public humiliation that will afflict Andrew the most.
- Demotion: Reduced to just a commoner
- Historical Precedent: The initial monarch to lose his titles in recent history
- Naval Career: Notably painful given his service in the engagement
He remains a counsellor of state, theoretically able to act for the sovereign, and he is still in the lineage to the crown, but neither of these will truly happen.
Future Prospects
Do individuals he comes across still defer to him? Might they still forget themselves and call him Your Highness? Might they say Andrew,
Of course, he is not retiring to an ordinary town, but to the royal family's vast estate at a monarchical property.
At that location, he will be furnished by the sovereign with one of the estate properties and given some sort of financial support.
It is not his former home, where he paid a nominal lease for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit distant, but even so it may not be adequate distance.
Unresolved Issues
Matters remain unresolved. There are still files in the possession of American legislators to be disclosed.
- Political Pressure: Will lawmakers request additional information
- Financial Investigation: Or scrutinize the misuse of state resources
- Criminal Investigation: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his conduct
Perhaps for the present the harm to the monarchy to the institution is restricted. The narrative from the palace was clearly that the stripping of designations was what the sovereign, and particularly other senior royals, desired.
Altered Approach
The cessation of illusion that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the short statement showed evidently that the monarchy were siding with the complainant's account of incidents.
Additionally, for the premiere occasion they finally showed consideration for the victims: "These actions are judged required, regardless of the truth that he continues to deny the allegations against him."
Finally it is arrogance, self-interest and indolence that will destroy the institution. In his foolishness, self-gratification and greed, Andrew gives the impression never to have grasped that lesson.
