New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
