The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
