In a initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
