The people of Israel commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A senior delegate familiar with the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- Post-war administration of the region
Citizen Feeling
In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose brother endured the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until each abducted person come back none of us will feel safe."
"Once we see all home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to recover," she added.
Near the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Protester one woman remarked: "We need do any agreement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis desire the war to conclude in return for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the western district, sector and zone areas and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the night comes, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my little child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported another two fatalities had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
