Two Cuba-Destined Relief Sailboats Reported Missing subsequent to Leaving Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of unlocated sailboats transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Havana.
Naval Rescue Operations Launched
Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than 9 personnel, according to a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.
Context of Aid to Cuba
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission commented.
The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.
"The group is working closely with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Recent Relief Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the island.
That ship, dubbed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, cycles and food.
Larger Geopolitical Backdrop
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba since January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
International organizations have since highlighted "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Political tensions have intensified in recent months, with statements from several officials highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Reacting to recent proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Reports suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its disposal to locate the sailboats and secure the safety of the crews.
To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
